Sadaqah comes from the Arabic root sidq, meaning "truthfulness," because it is a sign of the truth of one's faith. Sadaqah is any form of voluntary charity given purely for the sake of Allah, without specific obligation. Unlike Zakat, Sadaqah is neither obligatory nor limited in amount.
Sadaqah in the Qur'an
Allah the Most High says:
"The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies for whom He wills." (Al-Baqarah 2:261)
"Those who spend their wealth night and day, secretly and publicly — their reward is with their Lord." (Al-Baqarah 2:274)
"Indeed, those men and women who give in charity — it will be multiplied for them, and for them is a generous reward." (Al-Hadid 57:18)
Sadaqah in the Hadith
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"Charity does not diminish wealth." (Muslim, Birr 69; Hadith 2588)
"Every act of goodness is charity." (Bukhari, Adab 33; Hadith 6021. Muslim, Zakat 52; Hadith 1005)
"Charity extinguishes the wrath of the Lord and protects from a bad death." (Tirmidhi, Zakat 28; Hadith 664)
Types of Sadaqah
- Material Sadaqah — money, food, clothing, water, mosque construction
- Spiritual Sadaqah — a smile, a greeting, guiding someone, removing an obstacle from the road
- Continuous Sadaqah (Sadaqah Jariyah) — water wells, mosques, schools — works that continue to reward you even after death
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When a person dies, his deeds end, except for three: a continuous charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him." (Muslim, Wasiyyah 14; Hadith 1631)
