Kaffarah in Arabic means "covering" or "expiation." In Shariah it is a compensation — material or in the form of worship — that a Muslim pays for a specific sin or for breaking a religious obligation. Kaffarah is precisely defined in the Qur'an.
Main types of Kaffarah
1. Kaffarah for breaking an oath (Kaffarat al-Yamin)
"Allah will not call you to account for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He will hold you accountable for the oaths you swear in earnest. The expiation is feeding ten poor persons of the average food you give your family, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. Whoever cannot afford this — let him fast three days." (Al-Ma'idah 5:89)
2. Kaffarah of Zihar
"Those who declare their wives unlawful by likening them to their mothers and then wish to retract — must free a slave before they touch each other. Whoever cannot — let him fast for two consecutive months; and whoever cannot — let him feed sixty poor persons." (Al-Mujadilah 58:3-4)
3. Kaffarah for breaking the Ramadan fast intentionally
A companion came to the Prophet saying, "I am ruined," after intentional intercourse during Ramadan. The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered him to free a slave, or fast two consecutive months, or feed sixty poor persons. (Bukhari, Sawm 30; Hadith 1936. Muslim, Siyam 81; Hadith 1111)
4. Kaffarah for unintentional manslaughter
"Whoever kills a believer by mistake — must free a believing slave and pay blood money to the deceased's family. Whoever cannot find a slave — let him fast for two consecutive months." (An-Nisa 4:92)
5. Hajj prohibitions (Fidya)
"Whoever among you is sick or has an ailment of the head — must compensate by fasting, charity, or sacrifice." (Al-Baqarah 2:196)
Who receives Kaffarah?
Kaffarah is given only to those who can receive Zakat — the poor, the needy, debtors, the wayfarer. It cannot be given to one's parents, children or the wealthy. One Kaffarah meal is usually counted as one person's full daily food.
