What is continuous charity?
Continuous charity, known in Arabic as sadaqah jariyah, is the form of charity whose reward continues even after a person's death. It is one of the most valuable acts of worship in Islam, because a single donation keeps touching lives for years.
The merit of sadaqah jariyah in hadith
"When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: continuous charity (sadaqah jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them."
(Sahih Muslim, hadith no. 1631)
This hadith is among those most frequently cited by Islamic scholars, and it shows the importance of continuous charity.
Examples of sadaqah jariyah
- A water well — thousands of villagers drink from it for years
- Mosque construction — reward is recorded for every prayer offered there
- Qur'an and educational books — every reader and learner brings reward
- Orphan education — one child's schooling changes an entire family
- Planting a tree — every fruit eaten from it counts as charity
Why continuous charity is different
A one-time charity meets a need for a moment, but sadaqah jariyah benefits people across generations. Many verses in the Qur'an about charity allude to this continuity.
How to give sadaqah jariyah
- Set the intention: "I am giving continuous charity for the sake of Allah."
- Choose a project: a water well, a mosque, a book fund.
- Deliver it to those in need through a trusted organisation.
As Al Baraka Azerbaijan volunteers we implement sadaqah jariyah projects with the principle of transparency.
