What is zakat al-Fitr?
Zakat al-Fitr — also known as fitr — is a special charity that a Muslim must give for themselves and their family at the end of Ramadan, before the Eid prayer.

Islamic scholars list these conditions:
- Being Muslim
- Possessing food beyond one's needs for the eve of Eid
- Age does not matter — the head of household pays for children too
The ruling in hadith
"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) made zakat al-Fitr obligatory upon every Muslim — free or slave, male or female, young or old — as one saa of dates or one saa of barley, and ordered it to be given before the people went out for the Eid prayer."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, hadith no. 1503; Sahih Muslim, hadith no. 984)
How much is one saa?
One saa is approximately 2.5-3 kg of a staple food (dates, barley, wheat, rice). In modern practice it is acceptable to give this amount in cash equivalent.
How much zakat al-Fitr per person?
In Azerbaijan the Caucasian Muslims Office announces the per-person amount each year before Ramadan. It is typically between 8-15 AZN. It is calculated separately for every member of your family.
When is zakat al-Fitr paid?
The obligation begins at sunset on the last day of Ramadan and continues until the Eid prayer. If paid after the prayer it is treated as ordinary charity.
Who receives zakat al-Fitr?
It is given to the 8 categories in At-Tawbah 60, especially the poor and the needy. Orphans, widows and debtors are first in line.
